Good day my friend! If you're reading this, chances are you've found yourself stuck in a pattern that's not serving you well. I want you to know something right up front: you're not alone, and more importantly, you're not stuck forever.
Life's Unwelcome Reruns
Have you ever felt like you're living the same disappointing day over and over again? I've been there, and I've walked alongside countless others who've felt trapped in what I call "life's unwelcome reruns." These are the patterns we fall into—the same financial mistakes, the same relationship choices, the same self-defeating behaviors—that keep producing results we don't want.
Here's what I've learned after decades of studying human behavior: these cycles aren't accidents. They're the result of deeply ingrained habits and beliefs that we've allowed to run on autopilot. The scary part? We often choose the familiar pain over the unfamiliar change, even when that familiar pain is slowly destroying our dreams.
But here's the truth that will set you free: no cycle is permanent. Every pattern can be broken! Every habit can be changed! The question isn't whether it's possible—it's whether you're ready to take the first step.
The Many Faces of Destructive Patterns
Let me paint you a picture of what these cycles look like in real life, because recognition is the beginning of recovery. Maybe you're caught in the financial hamster wheel—working harder but never getting ahead, spending money you don't have on things you don't really need, always promising yourself you'll start budgeting "next month."
Perhaps your cycle is relational. You keep attracting the same type of person who disappoints you, or you find yourself repeating the same communication mistakes that sabotage your closest relationships. Maybe you're the person who gives and gives until you're empty, then wonders why others take advantage of your generosity.
Some of you are battling health cycles—promising to eat better tomorrow while ordering takeout tonight, buying gym memberships you never use, or medicating emotional pain with substances or behaviors that only create more pain.
Here's what I want you to understand: these aren't character flaws. They're learned patterns, and anything learned can be unlearned. The cycle that has you trapped today doesn't define who you are tomorrow.
The Power of Seeing Clearly
Now, let me share the most important leadership lesson I've ever learned, and it applies just as much to leading yourself as it does to leading others: you cannot change what you cannot see. The first step—and I mean the very first step—to breaking any destructive cycle is developing what I call "honest awareness."
This isn't the kind of awareness that beats you up or fills you with shame. This is the kind of awareness that says, "I see what's happening here, and I'm ready to face it head-on." It's looking in the mirror and having an honest conversation with yourself about the patterns that have been running your life.
I remember working with a team leader who couldn't understand why his team kept losing good people. He blamed everything—the economy, the younger generation, even the coffee in the break room. But when he finally developed the courage to look honestly at his own leadership style, he discovered that his micromanaging and criticism were driving people away. That moment of honest awareness changed everything for him and his organization.
The same principle applies to your personal cycles. When you stop making excuses and start making observations, when you stop defending your patterns and start examining them, that's when real transformation becomes possible. Awareness isn't just the first step—it's the foundation upon which every other positive change is built.
Your New Beginning Starts Now
My friend, I want to leave you with this encouragement: the fact that you're reading these words tells me you're already further along than you might think. The desire for change is the seed of transformation, and that seed is already planted in your heart.
Breaking free from destructive cycles isn't about perfection—it's about progress. It's about making one better choice, then another, then another. It's about replacing old patterns with new ones, one decision at a time. And yes, it takes time. But here's what I know about time: it's going to pass anyway. The question is, will you use that time to keep running the same old program, or will you use it to write a new story?
You have everything within you right now to begin this journey. You have the awareness to see the pattern. You have the power to make a different choice. You have the strength to take that first step, even when—especially when—it feels uncomfortable.
Your past does not determine your future. Your mistakes do not define your potential. Your current circumstances do not limit your possibilities. The cycle ends when you decide it ends, and that decision can happen right now, in this moment.
Take that first step. Your future self is counting on it, and I believe in you completely!
Remember: leadership begins with leading yourself, and leading yourself begins with the courage to see clearly and the commitment to change completely.
To your growth and freedom,
Dr. Michael Schulz
